The Space Between You and the Wall

Close your eyes and notice the space around you. It looks empty. It isn't. On grounding, oneness, and why you already hold what you need.

The Short Version

Grounding is not something you handle once everything else is taken care of. It is getting quiet enough to feel your own awareness, the plain sense of being aware you exist right here, right now. That awareness is not separate from what is around you, or from the people you lead. The kindness you give the world is a reflection of the kindness you give yourself. Get quiet enough and you will find you already hold what you need. You are always home, even when you feel lost.

Try something with me.

Close your eyes. Take a few deep breaths. Then notice the space around you. The space between you and the wall. Between you and the tree outside. Between you and the ground under your feet.

Look at it. It seems empty.

It isn't.

There is something there. You can't see it, but if you go quiet enough, you can feel it. That feeling is your awareness. That is your consciousness. The simple weight of being aware that you exist, here, in this spot, right now.

Most of us go a whole day without feeling it once.

I did not grow up calling this meditation. I came to it slow. But it is the thing I keep coming back to, and it is the thing I build my coaching on, so I want to say it plainly. Grounding is not a luxury you get to later, once everything else is handled. It is how you get quiet enough to hear yourself think. And everything else comes after that.

What the quiet shows you

There is no separation. Not really. The space between you and the wall is made of the same stuff you are made of. Nothing that is made is unmade. You can't destroy matter. It doesn't go anywhere. It just transforms. We are all bits and pieces of the same thing, gathered for a while into a person, into you, into me.

Ram Dass would call it acceptance. Finding peace in the nature of awareness. In simply being. That is all grounding is. Connecting to the existence around you and within you, and getting familiar with it. Familiar with that frequency.

Why this changes how you treat people

And once you feel that, the way you treat people changes. Because you stop seeing them as separate from you.

I have always lived by the golden rule. It does not matter what faith or culture you come from. How you behave toward other people is the truest judge of who you are. Not how you talk about yourself. How you act in your most basic form. When you are angry. When you are tired. When it costs you something. Do you still choose kindness?

That is hard. Easier said than done. But it stops being a question when it is just who you are.

You already have what you need

Here is the part that took me longer to understand.

The kindness you give the world is a reflection of the kindness you give yourself. There should not be any separation there, because there isn't any. It is hard to be true to everyone when you're hardly true to yourself. You don't owe anybody anything except the truest version of you. And you can't hand that to other people if you won't give it to yourself first.

So the inside and the outside were never two different things. They are one thing. The same oneness, looked at from two sides.

This is what I mean when I say you already hold everything you need. You do. The clarity. The kindness. The way forward. It is not out there somewhere waiting to be acquired. It is the thing you are made of. You just have to get quiet enough to feel it.

And when you do, something settles.

There is nothing foreign about it. It feels like home. Because it is. You are home. You're always home.

Even when you feel lost, you are always home.
